That was once a lake / pond, which was drained in the 13th century. The outflow was directed to a central ditch and then passed through a 1.5km tunnel under "Le Malpas". This tunnel is the lowest of three, the middle is a railway tunnel, the top of the tunnel for the Canal du Midi.
