General Baron David Hendrik Chassé (1765-1849) commanded the citadel of Antwerp during the siege by the French in 1832 and derived its status as a national hero from this. He died in Breda in 1849 and was buried in the cemetery of Ginneken. In 1874, next to the church, the Citadel Monument was unveiled by King Willem III, where Chassé's grave is now located.
