Since the Middle Ages, the water level above the Bergse Grebbe has been regulated via a lock at the Spuihuis. Years later, in 1838, the Spuihuis was rebuilt. During this renovation, the clock on the Spuittoren was placed in the turret of the roof. The Spuittoren used to have two bells. One from the early sixteenth century, the other from 1723. Nowadays we only see one of them. The cellar and rear of the current Spuihuis are parts of a warehouse that stood there in the early 1900s. This was eventually merged with the rest of the building, making the house on the Spui a bit larger.

The function of the Spuihuis

The building has had various uses in recent years. You probably know it as a restaurant that has been there since 1996. But can you remember what came before? The Spuihuis, a rectangular building whose facade (XVIII B) is decorated by brick pilasters and a pediment, while the other facades contain older masonry (XVI?). A brick tower with a short slate spire rises above the facade. In this tower two bells: one (XVIa?) Jan, cast by Georgius Waghevens, the other in 1723 by Jan Albert de Grave.

The Spuihuis is located at the head of the filled-in harbour. Although there has been a restaurant in the characteristic building for years, it used to be a functional place. For this Bergse mystery we go underground and delve into the history of the Spuihuis.

When the water still flowed in front of the Spuihuis on the Kaai, the Spuihuis was the building from which the (spui) lock could be operated. With such a lock you ensured that the inland water flows away and the outside water flows towards the city. According to the West Brabant Archives, the history of the building dates back to the 15th century.
