The city of Essen is building a new park, the Krupp Park, in the Krupp Belt as part of the "Urban Redevelopment West - Bochold / Altendorf-Nord" funding program. The northern part was inaugurated in 2009.
The Krupp Belt
The Krupp belt borders directly to the west of the city center of Essen. The Krupp cast steel factory used to be spread over 230 hectares. After the heavy destruction in the Second World War and after most of the factory facilities had been shut down, the site was partially derelict and inaccessible. Essen is now realizing an important project for further urban development in the Krupp belt. High-quality office and commercial locations are being developed, which are supplemented by residential areas.
Ecology, technology and use of the Krupp Park
With the Krupp Park, a park was created for the people in Altendorf and in the west of Essen. On the other hand, the restoration of the Krupp belt began with the construction of the Krupp Park by the city of Essen.Excavation from the construction of the Berthold-Beitz-Boulevard, the new main thoroughfare through the Krupp Belt, and the construction of the neighboring ThyssenKrupp Quarter was installed in the Krupp Park. 1 meter to 1.50 meters of clay soil were applied to this. A clay track and a drainage mat lie between the excavation and the clay.

A lake is fed with rainwater from the Krupp Park and from the roof areas of the ThyssenKrupp Quarter. From the ThyssenKrupp Quarter it reaches the Krupp Park via a canal and resurfaces from a culvert at the entrance to Berthold-Beitz-Boulevard / quarter arch. In Krupp Park, ditches lead rainwater to the lake. From the lake it is routed via a canal to the Borbecker Mühlenbach.
Forest areas in which, for example, sycamore, wild cherry or common beech grow, were created so that people in the future - on hot summer days, their number at one

climate change can increase - find cooling in the shade of the trees. Cool air, which is generated when the trees evaporate rainwater or which arises over the meadows, already flows into the neighboring building areas and ensures more pleasant temperatures there.
Forests, meadows and lakes will also offer numerous animals, such as hedgehogs, wrens, green woodpeckers, swifts or dragonflies, food, hiding places and places to nest. From here they fly or wander into the surrounding area and enliven the gardens there.
During the construction of the Krupp Park, the citizens were involved as part of the "Feelings of Home" project (see picture gallery). With their help, a place for excursions for young and old with recreational value has been created (see general site plan). And people continue to get involved, school classes have sponsored playgrounds.
