Riga is the capital of Latvia and, with around 600,000 inhabitants, the largest city in the Baltic States. At the same time, with around one million inhabitants, it is the largest metropolitan area in the three Baltic states. Even before Riga was founded (1201) at the confluence of the Rīdzene (German: Riege – hence the name Riga) and the Düna, which was later filled in, there was a settlement of Finno-Ugric Livs on the right bank of the Düna (Wikipedia).
