Glavotok (from glava=head of the island) is a small town that grew up in the vicinity of the Franciscan monastery of St. Mary.

It was first mentioned as a summer residence with a chapel of the Frankopan princes of Krk in 1277. Prince Ivan Frankopan of Krk gave the summer residence with some land to Brother Matija Bošnjak in 1468 so that he could found a monastery.

The current monastery church was built in 1507 and is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, while the monastery itself was rebuilt several times. Due to the strong waves, the monastery was even moved a few meters into the coast in 1879.
