The Grand Harbour in Valletta was the lifeline of Malta for many centuries. The harbour witnessed the Ottoman siege 500 years ago, which led to the founding of Valletta and the surrounding fortresses.
Today, Malta's Grand Harbour is an important transshipment point for goods from all over the world, a popular cruise port and marina. Together with the Marsamxett harbour to the west of Valletta, the Grand Harbour is currently the largest marina in the Mediterranean.
The best view of the harbour is from the Upper Barakka Gardens or during one of the harbour tours to the luxurious yachts and gigantic cruise ships.
