Until 2012, the summit of the Wendelstein housed a 24-hour weather station of the German Weather Service, and to this day, an observatory of the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. With an average of over 120 clear nights a year, the Wendelstein site in Germany is particularly well-suited for such facilities.
