This fantastic ruin dates back to the 11th century and was built by William the Conqueror. It occupies a gap in the chalk hills and dominates the landscape. It underwent a tumultuous history and was eventually slighted in the mid-17th century. Now it's owned by the National Trust and open to the public.

Arguably the UK's most beautiful medieval castle ruins, Corfe Castle's history goes back over a millennia and it has long benefitted from its dominant position on the steep-sided chalk hill. In 1646 it was destroyed by Cromwell’s troops during the English Civil War and has stayed in ruins ever since.

For cyclists, this short section gives an almost 360-degree panorama of the castle ruins, before rejoining a main road. After a lefthand turn opposite the visitors centre and car park you'll soon disappear back onto quiet lanes.
