Tips

  • The Prinzenbau is a classical palace in Stuttgart, which served as a city palace for the Württemberg rulers until 1918 to entertain guests and as a place to live for family members. Since 1919, the Prinzenbau has been used as the administrative headquarters and is now the seat of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Justice.
The building is part of the historical ensemble of buildings around the Schiller monument on Schillerplatz, which also includes the Old Chancellery, the Old Castle, the Collegiate Church and the Fruchtkasten.
The Prinzenbau was built under the government of several Württemberg dukes. Between 1605 and 1607, the architect Heinrich Schickhardt built the basement and basement in the Renaissance style. In the decades that followed, the building was expanded into a 3-storey utility building. Towards the end of the 17th century, Matthias Weiß (1636-1707) rebuilt the Prince's Building in the classicist style. Between 1711 and 1722 the building was supplemented by an extension by Philipp Joseph Jenisch and Johann Friedrich Nette, which connects the Prinzenbau across the corner with the Old Chancellery. The extension includes the chancellery arch, an arched passageway from Schillerplatz to Königstrasse.
After severe destruction in the Second World War in 1944, the Prinzenbau was rebuilt in 1947-1951 under Paul Schmitthenner in its external appearance and the interior was adapted to the requirements of a modern administration building.
