Of glacial origin, over the centuries Lake Benedetto has been filled by alluvial material transported by the Avio stream. Eng. Benedetto, to whom the name of the lake is owed, devised a system to recreate the ancient reservoir by emptying the filling materials with a hydraulic system through a tunnel that connects the lake bed to the valley floor. A dam was later built, immediately upstream of Lake Avio.
