The cycle route “WWII in Zutendaal” was created following the Under the Radar project of the province of Limburg. In this project, conflict archaeological zones, mainly from WWII, were mapped using original aerial photography from '44-'45 and citizen research. The municipality of Zutendaal, Erfgoedbeweging Soennes & Swaerdes and Regionaal Landschap Kempen en Maasland worked together to bundle notable events and locations. The Munsterbos is a nice area where you will certainly find cooling and shade during these hot summer days. To the south west of the Munsterbos lies the Domeinbos Groenendaal. There are also places to discover picnic spots in these woods where you can enjoy your sandwich and/or drink.

The chapel of the Secret Army in the Munsterbos forest commemorates the former hiding place and execution site of members of the resistance movement. This location along the Weerstandspad (Resistance Path) was the refuge of approximately 800 resistance fighters from the Bilzen - Genk – Kortessem region. Three of these resistance fighters from Bilzen were executed here in the vicinity on September 5 and 7, 1944, just a few days before the liberation. The annual commemoration takes place every second Sunday of September.
