The Hambach opencast mine almost meant the end for the small village of Morschenich. By 2024, the place should be dredged. After the end of lignite, there is now a chance for a new future. Only a handful of Alt-Morschenichers still live in the town, which had around 600 inhabitants in the best of times. But most of the houses in Alt-Morschenich have been empty for years and are rotting from the inside out, many have damage from decay or attempted break-ins. Gardens are overgrown, blackberries overgrow house terraces. End time mood wherever you look.
