From May to September you can take a boat tour with Elfriede on selected Sundays. The barge is pulled by the draft horse “Florian” around 2 kilometers to the Dörlbach cut. There we reconnect and we go back to the start. Takes around 45 minutes in total.

The inn “Zum Ludwigskanal” serves traditional Franconian cuisine and good beer. In summer you can take a seat in the beautiful beer garden with a view of the canal.

The old towboat “Elfriede” also belongs to the inn. In the summer months it is regularly put back into operation and pulled by a horse to the Dörlbach cut.

You can find further information as well as opening and towing times here: ludwigskanal.de.

Very nice and helpful hosts who kindly hosted our large group in May 2006 after we had cycled 65 km in the rain all day and arrived completely soaked.

What is the historical significance of the Treidelschiff Elfriede and the Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal?

The Treidelschiff Elfriede is a restored historic towboat that operates on a section of the Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal, also known as the "Old Canal." This canal was a vital 19th-century waterway connecting the North Sea and the Black Sea. The term "Treideln" refers to the traditional method of pulling ships along waterways by humans or draft animals. The Elfriede, originally a cargo ship, was restored in 1995 and now offers a unique opportunity to experience this historical mode of transport, pulled by a horse, providing insight into the canal's rich past. In 2024, the practice of "Treideln" with the Elfriede was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of Bavaria.

Are the paths along the Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal suitable for wheelchairs or strollers?

Yes, the paths along the Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal, particularly in the area around Schwarzenbach and Burgthann, are generally described as accessible and gentle terrain. This makes them suitable for leisurely walks, cycling, and often for visitors with strollers or wheelchairs. The flat nature of the towpaths provides an enjoyable experience for a wide range of mobility levels.

Can I book a private tour on the Treidelschiff Elfriede?

Yes, in addition to the scheduled public rides, private tours on the Treidelschiff Elfriede can be arranged. This offers a more exclusive experience for groups interested in the historical towboat journey. For details on booking private tours, including availability and pricing, it's best to contact the operators directly through the information provided on www.ludwigskanal.de.

Are there any specific landmarks or scenic viewpoints near the Gasthaus and Treidelschiff?

The primary scenic feature is the Ludwig-Donau-Main Canal itself, with its picturesque landscapes of reeds, meadows, and orchards. The journey on the Treidelschiff Elfriede takes you to the Dörlbacher Einschnitt (Dörlbach Cut), which is a notable section of the canal. The Gasthaus's beer garden also offers direct views of the canal, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

What is the best time of year to visit if I want to avoid crowds?

The Treidelschiff Elfriede operates from May to September, which is also the most popular time for outdoor activities along the canal. To potentially avoid the largest crowds, consider visiting on weekdays outside of peak holiday periods. If you're primarily interested in hiking or cycling along the canal and not necessarily the boat ride, the shoulder seasons (late April/early May or late September/early October) can offer pleasant weather with fewer visitors.
