The Löwengrube near Altdorf used to serve as a quarry, its sandstones were used to build the city wall and later the university building. Then the quarry was forgotten. It was rediscovered in 1686 by the court master of Baron Löwenstern, hence the name. The wilderness was quickly cleared and converted into a fairground, which was inaugurated in 1686 by the Altdorf students in a happy mood. When the university was closed in 1809, a few brewing residents opened a beer cellar there.

The lion's den consists of a spacious rock cellar and a rock gallery, which was formerly used as a bowling alley. The whole area was formerly used as a quarry. Was named the lions' den, formerly Löwengruft, after Friedrich Gottlieb von Löwenstern, which has contributed significantly to their development. The Löwengrube is one of the most beautiful natural monuments around Altdorf.

Often crowded in summer, but otherwise it's rather quiet. A headlamp is advisable for the rock cellar.

Dreamlike nature, also in autumn. From Fürth to reach in 25min. Perfect with dog, water, caves but on Sundays and holidays a bit crowded ... 👍
