The Löwengrube near Altdorf used to be a quarry, and in the 16th century the town wall and later the university building were built from its sandstone. Then the quarry fell into oblivion. It was rediscovered in 1686 by Baron Löwenstern's tutor, hence the name. The wilderness was quickly cleared and converted into a festival site, which was inaugurated by Altdorf students in 1686 with great celebration. When the university was closed in 1809, a few citizens with brewing rights built a beer cellar there.

The lion's den consists of a spacious rock cellar and a rock gallery, which was formerly used as a bowling alley. The whole area was formerly used as a quarry. Was named the lions' den, formerly Löwengruft, after Friedrich Gottlieb von Löwenstern, which has contributed significantly to their development. The Löwengrube is one of the most beautiful natural monuments around Altdorf.
