Since the construction of the new fortifications - at the beginning of the seventeenth century - a gate has stood on this spot, at the southern entrance of Hulst.

This gate was built in the year 1780 and used to be called the Hospitaalpoort, this was a reference to the 'hospitaal' (guest house) that stood in the Gentsestraat behind. Now we know the gate as 'Gentse Poort'. The gate has the characteristic curvature to prevent direct fire from the city. In 1902, next to the gate in the rampart, an entrance was dug for the Hulst-Walsoorden steam tram.

Once you are through the gate and turn around, you will see three natural stone trophies at the top of the gate. The middle bears the coat of arms of generality, the sign of the United Netherlands. This is the only gateway to Hulst where a road has been laid next to it. Freight traffic enters along this road, but in history this happened because of the construction of the tram line. Due to the curvature in the gate, the tram could not pass through. This gate bears the Generality coat of arms, the sign of the United Netherlands.

On your walk you pass the 4 city gates, where 3 gates still serve as access to the fortress.

At the Ghent Gate you can find the Pagadder (Spanish soldier) "Puerta".
