Many visitors to the Deutsches Burgenmuseum on the Heldburg Fort do not pay too much attention to the small town below the castle. Unjustly, because unobstructed by large residential and industrial plants, it comes up with the most beautiful half-timbered architecture. No museum area with tourists Nepp like elsewhere. Here people just live their everyday lives. First mentioned in the 9th century, the city emerges again in the early 14th century. After about 2 kilometers of tour you have seen them, and again and again enjoy a magnificent view of the castle. Worthwhile!

The small town of Heldburg was once surrounded by a mighty city wall. Construction began as early as 1402. After completion, the imposing bulwark had two gates and 14 towers.
Today only 5 towers and the lower city gate remain from the fortifications. Even today, with a little imagination, you can still get an idea of the medieval size along the length of the former city wall.
