Unfortunately, only the tower of the church, which is just over 80 m high, has been preserved. The nave was heavily destroyed in World War II, and demolished in 1960. It was one of the highest church in Wismar, with a height of over 32 m in the nave. Today you can still see the outlines.

The imposing sacred building belongs to one of the 3 main churches in Wismar, as well as St. Nikolai and St. Georgen churches. The late Gothic hall church was built near the market square at the beginning of the 13th century. In the 15th century it was then extended by two side halls.

The church was badly damaged in World War II. In 1960, by resolution of the then city council, the damaged nave was blown up, so that today only the 80 m high west tower remains.

Destroyed in World War II. Beautiful brick architecture

Here you can see what wars do to historical buildings.
The city has rebuilt the foundation stones of the completely destroyed nave and thus one has a good idea of the original size of the church, of which "only" the steeple has remained.

St. Mary's Church is located in the immediate vicinity of the market square and the town hall. It was the town's council and main parish church.

The church was initially built as a hall church in the 13th century. In 1339, under the direction of master builder Hans Grote, construction began on the three-aisled basilica based on the French cathedral architectural design.

The nave was completed in 1375. Around 1450, the west tower was extended by three floors and reached a height of 80 meters. The clock faces of the tower clock have a diameter of 5 meters. The clock mechanism plays one of fourteen chorales three times a day via the carillon.

After severe destruction in World War II, only the 80-meter-high west tower remained of the three-aisled basilica with cathedral ambulatory choir.

Shortly before the end of World War II, aerial torpedoes destroyed St. Mary's Church and with it the entire so-called Gothic Quarter. In the process, centuries-old buildings, such as the archdeaconry, the old school on the south side of St. Mary's Church and St. Georgen, were partly razed to the ground. One of the most beautiful Gothic quarters in the Baltic region was thus destroyed.

By decision of the then city council as the local body of the socialist central state, the damaged nave of St. Mary's Church was blown up in 1960, so that only the 80-meter-high church tower remained.

The tower is the only thing that survived the bombing. The actual nave is only outlined by low walls.
