If you cycle or walk on the cycle path, the former district railway line in the direction of Schenklengsfeld, you will pass the historic Oberrode estate.
First mentioned in a document on October 14, 1351, the "Rittergut Oberrode" looked back on its 650th anniversary in 2001. Since it was first mentioned, Oberrode has had a very checkered history with frequently changing owners.
Oberrode was even recognized as an independent municipality by the Ministry of the Interior in Kassel on January 24, 1861, after many years of arguments and quarrels between the Braun family, the owners at the time, the city of Bad Hersfeld and the municipality of Sorga.Since the end of the 19th century, fertilizer and building lime, which was mined in the nearby limestone quarry, has been burned in two lime kilns. The transport took place via the loading station in the lower area and was connected to the rail line of the Hersfeld district railway via a siding. From there, the lime was transported with the Hersfeld district railway via rail to the train station in Bad Hersfeld and then further via the DB route to the retail and commercial businesses.
The two kilns are still behind the manor, but are falling into disrepair. Lime extraction was discontinued by the then owner, Mrs von Blomberg, in the mid-1960s due to unprofitability. The connecting rails were still there for many years, but were later dismantled. Today everything is overgrown with undergrowth.
There was also a nutria farm on the estate in the 1980s. At that time, the skins of these rodents were used for the clothing industry. But that didn't last too long either, and breeding was stopped because it was no longer profitable either.
The manor is now partly used for agriculture, with the bell in the tower above the entrance still ringing every half hour and on the hour, showing people what the hour has struck.
Further information on the history of "Gut Oberrode" is available in a book by the Bad Hersfeld History Association: "Bad Hersfeld History and Stories - 650 Years Oberrode", or you can find out more on the Internet at badenhausen.net.
