Oakham Castle probably doesn't fit the traditional image of a castle. What is now called Oakham Castle was originally the Great Hall of a much larger fortified manor house. This originally had many of the traditional features of a castle such as a curtain wall, a gatehouse and a drawbridge with iron chains.

Oakham Castle is famous for the unique tradition that peers of the realm should forfeit a horseshoe to the Lord of the Manor of Oakham on their first visit to the town. 230 horseshoes currently decorate the walls of Oakham Castle, including the oldest from Edward IV dating to 1470.

The car park to the east of the castle makes a good starting point for rides in Rutland. Lots of cafes nearby. Sigma Sport cycle shop not far away too.
