From the 14th to the 19th century, Landsberg was an important trading center for the salt trade in southern Germany. Over time, several large salt storage buildings were built between the west side of the old town and the right bank of the Lech. The Salzstadel in the Hintere Salzgasse is a simple but spacious functional building, which was used to temporarily store the salt before it was sold and transported.
After extensive renovation measures and conversions, the buildings were repurposed as apartments, shops, the city library and city archive.
