Before the Sint-Nicolaas Church was put into use in 1875, church services had been held in the barn church on the Overeind (now: the Malapertweg) since 1688. This barn church stood approximately where the Structuurbaan and the Malapertweg now cross. This church had now become too small. That is why a piece of building land was purchased in 1870, located where Schoolstraat now runs, with the intention of building a new church there. Due to health problems, the incumbent pastor C.H. left. van der Grindt moved to a smaller parish (Benschop) in early March 1873.
