The ecomuseum of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is a museum in La Manche, located in Vains.

It opened in 2001 under the name Maison de la Baie. It is dedicated to the formation and life of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.

Housed in an old farmhouse, a traditional farm of the bay, on the edge of the coast, it is an interpretation center on the formation and evolution of the bay, its fauna, its flora and the activities, past and present, of the men in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.

The Maison de la Baie de Vains changed its name in 2011, a year after the closure of that of Courtils, to allow better identification of what this place is and what it offers.

The ecomuseum is a property of the Conservatoire du Littoral developed, managed and run by the Manche Departmental Council as part of the departmental network of Manche sites and museums.

On the edge of the shore with a breathtaking view of Mont Saint-Michel, the Ecomusรฉe de la Baie is an interpretation center allowing you to discover the functioning of the natural environments of the Bay, the way in which man has exploited these for centuries. very particular spaces and the evolution of landscapes through the ages.

Covering more than 400 mยฒ, the permanent exhibition allows you to understand the evolution of the fauna and flora over the seasons, as well as the characteristics of the different natural environments. The preservation of these balances today constitutes a major challenge for this area, listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Man lives in this environment and has always exploited its riches. In the past, he extracted salt using an original process, which has now disappeared. The salt maker's workshop allows you to discover this ancestral technique again.

Professional shore fishing, once very active, is today gradually being replaced by new activities, such as the farming of oysters, mussels and salt meadow sheep. Two exhibition rooms retrace these activities and their developments, notably through the presentation of objects collected in the region (fishing gear, nets, etc.). All these spaces, decorated with films, models and interactive terminals, are accessible to adults and children alike.
