The Przewalski's horse (Equus przewalskii), also known as the Tachi, Asian wild horse or Mongolian wild horse, is a species of horse. It is named after the Russian expedition traveler Nikolai Mikhailovich Przewalski, who in 1878 brought the skin and skull of the horse species, which was largely unknown in the western world, to St. Petersburg from one of his expeditions to Central Asia. It was then scientifically introduced three years later. The compact physique, the relatively dark coat color, the standing mane and the development of long hair only on the lower half of the tail can be named as special characteristics of the animals. In addition, an eel stripe and occasional leg stripes often occur.

At the time it was scientifically named, the Przewalski horse was already very rare. Shortly after the end of the Second World War there were only around 30 individuals in human care, only in the Prague Zoo and in the Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich were foals of the species born. The last free-living specimen was sighted in 1969. However, the survival of the Przewalski horse has been secured to this day thanks to committed breeding programs. The coordination of breeding was improved by the establishment of a stud book in 1959. It is kept by the zoo in Prague, the EEP stud book is maintained by the zoo in Cologne.
