The European ground squirrel is primarily at home in south-eastern Europe, parts of Austria and Turkey. In Germany it could be found in the Ore Mountains until the 1950s. A reintroduction attempt was unsuccessfully abandoned in 2016. Not so in Nuremberg! Ground squirrels have been released into the wild on the zoo grounds and are obviously thriving. You can watch the cute little rodents in many enclosures and along the paths.
