Three species of birds have moved into the desert house of Nuremberg Zoo. Butterfly finches (Uraeginthus bengalus), desert bullfinches (Bucanetes githagineus) and Senegal marant (Lagonosticta senegala), native to the arid regions of northern Africa, have been seen for a few weeks and have settled in well.

All three bird species belong to the finch family and live in desert areas of Africa. The reddish colored Senegalamarant is one of the most commonly kept African finch species. The bluish butterfly finches are also kept as ornamental birds in Europe. The rather inconspicuous desert bullfinch - or desert trumpeter - is characterized less by its coloring than by its distinctive call, which is reminiscent of a trumpet.

Watching the hustle and bustle of the dung beetles is particularly cute. Like Sysiphus, they keep trying to climb up the steep rocks and keep falling back down. If fresh manure was dumped, they know no stopping.

Small rodents and birds, large lizards and dung beetles - it's warm and more exciting than you think.
