The complex was built during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, on the remains of a Romanesque temple. The neoclassical façade from 1799 is by Ventura Rodríguez and the interior is French Gothic.

The María bell, located in the left tower, dates from 1584 and is the second largest in Spain, weighing 12,000 kilos. The cloister, completed in 1472, is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. The carving of Santa María la Real is Romanesque from the 12th century, the oldest Marian image of those preserved in Navarra, and it is made of covered wood.

"In the tourist information I get a stamp in my Credencial del peregrino, as the pilgrim's passport is called here in Spain, and stroll ... on to the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Real, a Gothic cathedral in a somewhat playful Navarese style. There too I get an impressive stamp. In the main nave is the alabaster sarcophagus of the donor Charles III and his wife Eleanor of Castile. The attached former monastery buildings now mainly house an exhibition, I take the time for an extensive tour."
