Young Ralph Cross is at least as old as the 13th century, but no one knows the true story of it's beginnings.

Some say that the cross was erected by a farmer, Ralph, who'd found a traveller at this point who had starved to death. He erected the cross adding a small hollow to the top so that rich passersby could drop in some coins for poor travellers, who could use the money to buy food to sustain them on their journey. If you look, you can see the hollow in the cross.

Young Ralph Cross was damaged by vandals in the 1960s and put back together in the 1980s with a new centre section being carved from gritstone.
