The small town of Kaster has belonged to the county (later duchy) of Jülich since the Middle Ages. It was the seat of a large Jülische office. In a severe fire in 1624, the medieval town was largely destroyed. However, the city wall and gates have been preserved, especially the Agatha Gate in the south-west and the Erft Gate in the north-east (both originally from the 14th century); The owl tower (from 1370) also belongs to the town fortifications. The old Jülich castle was destroyed in 1648 and is only visible as a ruin today.

The Eulenturm is a round brick tower with a medieval core. The tower was renewed in the 17th century.

The site is always worth exploring. It almost fell victim to brown coal mining in the 1950s.
