The Hermitage of San Miguel de Carceña (also known as the hermitage of San Miguel de la Penilla since it is the town where it is located), is a small jewel of a Romanesque hermitage in transition to Gothic and dating from the beginning of the 13th century and which In the past it served the faithful of La Cueva, La Penilla and La Encina de Cayón.
The temple is small, with a single masonry nave and ashlars at the corners, finished off with a semicircular apse of masonry. The main portal is on the façade and consists of a pointed arch decorated with small flowers with four petals, saw teeth and stars. Facade facing South and next to the Epistle.
On the west facade, a secondary door with a pointed arch, and in the past it culminated in a belfry located on the facade (now missing).

There is a curious legend about this place where the hermitage was located, according to which two shepherds were surprised by a bull that was scratching insistently in one place. As they approached, they discovered an image of San Miguel buried, supposedly buried by the Christians who were fleeing the Agarena invasion and that is why it was decided to build a temple dedicated to the archangel, but in a place more suitable for access by believers. But once the construction began in that nearby place that was believed to be better, the materials insistently disappeared and reappeared in the place of the original appearance, so it was definitely taken as a sign that that was where the hermitage should be built and there is the hermitage of San Miguel.
