The origins of the Wörthsee are not entirely clear, but of course it was the Ice Age glaciers that shaped the hilly landscape throughout the region. The lake probably has its origins in the silting up of the neighboring Ammersee.

A small area gradually split off and became Wörthsee. There is even an island in the lake, the 750 meter long and 250 meter wide island of Wörth, also called Mouse Island.
