The decommissioned Grohnde nuclear power plant (KWG) is located on the Weser north of the district of Grohnde in the Lower Saxony municipality of Emmerthal in the Hameln-Pyrmont district. The central component of the former nuclear power plant was a pressurized water reactor of the 1300 MW construction line, which was built by Kraftwerk Union. The power plant was operated by the community nuclear power plant Grohnde GmbH & Co. oHG. Shareholders were PreussenElektra (83.3%) and Stadtwerke Bielefeld (16.7%). The operatorship was with PreussenElektra.[1]

The rated output of the power plant was 3900 megawatts (thermal). The net electrical output was around 1360 megawatts. 193 UO2 fuel assemblies with an enrichment of up to 4% by weight 235U and MOX fuel assemblies were used. The reactor belonged to the second generation in Germany, the so-called pre-convoy plants, and first went critical (i.e. reached normal operating condition) on September 1, 1984. After 37 years of operation, the decommissioning took place on December 31, 2021
