From 1957 to 1962, with the permission of the authorities, the Cheminova company used the area around Buhne 42 as a poison dump for around 1500 tons of environmentally harmful substances.
The Danish state later used the dune slacks in the 1960s as a landfill for chemicals collected nationwide.
Large parts of the poison have now been removed and the last part has been encapsulated by an iron sheet piling with a membrane filter over it. An investigation from 2013 showed that the seepage area of the landfill is still massively contaminated today. The contamination consists mainly of pesticides.
