With “Experience Nature Langwarder Groden” a direct opportunity was created on the North Sea to experience nature up close. The highlight is the circular hiking trail, where you can discover the creation of a new salt marsh with its individual flora and fauna and the tides.

Salt marshes form the so-called silting up zone of the North Sea. This is where water meets land. The regular flooding and the high salinity of the sea water require real specialists of the plant world. They have adapted to the conditions in the salt marshes and, together with around 400 animal species, form a unique habitat.

The plants of the salt marshes can all be found in the Langwarder Groden over the months. These plants are specialists that can cope with the high salt content of the water.

Today, salt marshes are among the particularly rare and endangered habitats. Due to the regular salt water flooding, the dikes have increased since they were opened

The Langwarder Groden is a tide-dependent wetland. On the boardwalk you are right in the middle and close to nature.

Since 1930, the salt marshes in front of the northern main dike of the Butjadingen peninsula have been separated from the tidal influence by a summer dike for a length of 4 km. The low summer dikes do not protect against winter storm surges, but they do prevent summer flooding and thus facilitate agricultural use. The natural, dynamic process of salt marsh development is thus lost.

The impetus for the renaturation came from the search for compensation areas for the JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven. The construction of the container terminal was associated with interventions in the Wadden Sea nature, for which compensation must be made under nature conservation law. Since the Langwarder Groden is part of the national park and is no longer used for agricultural purposes, it made sense to allow natural development again by opening the summer dike.

In the summer of 2014, the summer dike was opened over a length of 900 m. In addition, soil was removed from the Groden. Since then, 140 hectares of the Langwarder Groden have been exposed to the tide again, 70 of them regularly, the rest during higher winter tides. This is one of the most extensive renaturation measures since the national park was established.

It will take many years or even decades for the natural vegetation and structural diversity to return. A barrier-free nature trail makes it possible to follow this development from the very beginning. A 400 m long boardwalk allows you to cross temporarily flooded areas without leaving your feet dry. The Langwarder Groden is a unique project to protect the Wadden Sea natural area, because here you are standing in the middle of a newly emerging salt marsh. Nature can be experienced up close here, information boards and interactive models explain the flora and fauna. On a footbridge you can cross the mud flats, which are home to lots of animals and plants, with dry feet. The fascinating natural spectacle of the tide can also be experienced here. You watch with excitement as the environment changes every minute.
