Veldwijk Cemeteries

In the 19th century, when industrialization and urbanization emerged, more and more people became uprooted, because they were away from their social environment and sometimes because of the poor working conditions, many people lost their way. There was a great demand for shelter for what used to be called the insane.
They were taken out of society  and asylums were built in remote places to hide them.Veldwijk estate was owned by M.J. Chevallier, he was one of the founders of the "Association for the Christian Care of the Mentally and Nervously"  he sold the estate to the association in 1884 to have an asylum built there. It has been expanded in a palvio style because they thought that patients would be better cared for in a 'family situation'.In short, today has become an estate again after many mergers. Where some palvioens are still used by GGZ and there are also a
number sold and converted into apartments.
