The Rijsterbos is one of the most famous forests in Friesland. There are many walking paths in this largest forest in the slightly hilly Gaasterland. The forest was created in 1676 by the Amsterdam regent Job de Wildt. Here, ladies in flowing skirts used to stroll along forest avenues that converged in a star shape. If you want to roam the “Rysterbosk” (its Frisian name), you just need to follow the red or blue arrows. But it's even nicer when you just wander aimlessly through the forest on the old paths and are suddenly surprised by the view from the Mirnserklif of the IJsselmeer. Text: VVV Waterland
