In the years 1793 and 1794 and from 1813 to 1815 the Bergisches Land was the scene of two wars against France.

Because of the risk of epidemics from typhus, the dead were buried here in the forest not far from the castle. The remains of 4,000 French are said to lie on this site. Many of them had not succumbed to their wounds but to diseases.
