History of the dam court (patrimonial court) Brobergen 900 – 1236
The Lords of Brobergen, formerly bailiffs of the Counts of Stade, became bailiffs of the Archbishops of Bremen in 1236. The origin of the Brobergen dam court goes back to the time of the counts and the time of the archbishops of Bremen. At that time, the nobility were endowed with so-called fiefdoms (landlordship) by the rulers. Said fiefdoms served to stabilize the power structure and to defend the country. This led to dependent farmers in the areas of manorial rule. In the election of judges, it was no longer the number of votes that counted, but the weight of the votes, and the more real estate that could be proven, the more weight the vote had. The management of a court thus fell into the hands of nobles.
