The city of Tirano is the capital of the municipality of the same name in the Italian province of Sondrio, Lombardy region with almost 9,000 inhabitants.
The settlement developed on the left bank of the Adda River below Dosso Castle, built in 1073.
In 1797 Valtellina joined the Cisalpine Republic. From 1800 onwards, Graubünden wine trading companies bought vineyards in Tirano and the surrounding area. From 1908 to 1910, the newly built Bernina line was connected to the Italian network.
Tirano and its surroundings are known for their culinary (Veltliner) specialties: wine, dried meat (bresaola), cheese, rye bread, pizzoccheri and other pasta.

Beautiful little town in Valtellina with an old town worth seeing west of the Adda.

I felt very comfortable in this small town with about 9,000 inhabitants.

Tirano is a small Italian town at the entrance to the Veltins mountain range near the Swiss border and is known as the terminus of the Bernina Express, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is home to the Madonna di Tirano pilgrimage church, a stunning 16th-century basilica. Tirano boasts a picturesque old town with stately homes, a medieval city wall, and is a center for local culinary delights and wine tastings.
