      In the 11th century, Irish monks settled on the banks of the Meuse and founded a Benedictine abbey. This will continue to develop through the centuries through many successes and rivalries.

      Built between 1033-1035 in the architectural style "Roman Mosan", the Abbey Church (Abbatiale) is part of the abbey until the XVIIIth century. Between 1260 and 1264, the Romanesque apse was demolished and the Abbey church was extended with a Gothic choir with a remarkable vault on the cross of the warheads.

      In 1568 the monastery was partially burnt out by the Huguenots and then completely destroyed in 1793 by the revolutionaries. Restored in the nineteenth century, the abbey is today one of the most beautiful monuments of Romanesque art in Belgium. It symbolizes faith, history and the vicissitudes of man.

      During the visit, the visitor will discover prestigious testimonies of history such as Romanesque and Gothic art, stalls of mercy dating from 1443, wall paintings, tombstones, exceptional sculptures (Romanesque Virgin, sculptures by Lambert Lombart, a Calvary of the XVIth century, Triptych by Auguste Donnay) and even works of contemporary art, such as a Vietnamese Stations of the Cross.

      But what also leaves a great impression is the wealth of the crypt, under the altar: Merovingian sarcophagi, graffiti from the twelfth century, reliquaries and many other remains of the old abbey make the past clear to the visitor.

      Today, every stone, every architectural element, every sculptural contribution speaks of a particular conception of the world and man...
