Until the middle of the 19th century, the port of Saint-Malo was a grounding port which made it possible to place Saint-Malo among the main French maritime cities. But faced with the development of other ports, it appears necessary to initiate the construction of structures to facilitate maritime traffic. This is how a first project was proposed by Vauban in 1698. Not realized at the time, it was put back on the agenda in 1836 and also included many other modifications.

The harbor was built in the heart of the roadstead that once separated the corsair town from the mainland. A lock connects the four harbor basins with the sea. The Voorgave has two ferry terminals where ferries and express boats dock. There are daily boat connections from St-Malo to England and the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. Under the city walls, various pontoons have been constructed for pleasure craft.
