Piarist Church of Our Lady, Krems

From the parish square, a covered staircase leads up to the Piarist Church, which dominates the old town of Krems.

The Piarist Church in Krems an der Donau, also known as the Krems Frauenberg Church, is the oldest church in the city. The Roman Catholic church was possibly dedicated to St. Stephen, the patron of the Diocese of Passau.

The late Gothic hall church is stylistically related to the Vienna Cathedral workshop and is therefore also known as the "little sister" of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. Inside, the steeply rising Gothic church impresses with richly profiled pillars, columns, capitals and many other highlights of Gothic architecture. The baroque high altar was built according to plans by Joseph Maria Götz. The altarpiece is by Martin Johann Schmidt, it is dated 1756 and shows the Assumption of Mary.

The watchtower, which was added to the east, has been owned by the city since 1616. It was the seat of the city watchman and was inhabited until a few decades ago. Opposite the church portal, the covered Piarist staircase, which was completely renovated in 2004, leads to the parish square.
