The cross was supposed to be given away, but fortunately could still be saved. The permission to erect it dates back to 1655: 'On April 5, 1655, Mathias Gädinger zu Elsarn was granted permission to erect a martyr pillar in the Stangl on the plain, in the Straßer Freiheit.' Mathias Gattinger, the founder, and his wife Appolonia appear since 1639 as the owners of a 'housed estate' in Elsarn. He was elected village judge of Elsarn in 1648, then he appeared on the jury and again as village judge from 1652 to 1654.
