The Three Arch bridge was based on an Italian prototypes, for example, the Roman bridge at Rimini in Italy.

Completed in 1761, the bridge carries the main drive over the River Derwent up to Chatsworth House. The bridge was carefully angled so as to be seen from the house and orientated in such a way as to provide a striking view to the house from the entrance drive.

The bridge succeeded in fulfilling the design brief.
