The Hardtwaldsee is a popular wetland habitat for toads, which provide plenty of offspring here every year. At the right time of year (can sometimes be observed from March onwards) you can spot some toads mating here.
In almost all species, the usually smaller male clings to the female's armpits during mating. Male toads, on the other hand, hold on to the female's loins. The male carries this on his back for up to several days, but often no longer than an hour. In early spawners, such as common frogs and common toads, the males “travel” to the spawning water on a piggyback ride.
If a male has not yet found a female, he tries to attract one by croaking. This croaking can be very loud, as with green frogs, tree frogs or natterjacks. Their sound bubbles amplify the croaking so that it can be heard from several hundred meters to even kilometers.
