"The Lourdes Grotto in Altenkleusheim has existed since 1913.

The then parish vicar of the village Theodor Goebels was healed of a stomach ailment in Lourdes and, out of gratitude, had a Marian grotto built in Altenkleusheim based on the southern French model. Lava slag from the vicinity of Mayen in the Eifel was used as a building material. Original stones from the Lourdes grotto have been placed on both inner sides of the cave arch.

Around 6,000 pilgrims from near and far came to the inauguration in 1913. "

Bernadette later became a nun and died at the age of only 35. On December 8th (the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary) in 1933, she was canonized by Pope Pius XI.
