In Oostduinkerke you can learn about the life of fishermen back then. This tradition is still maintained here because it is the only place in Europe where crabs are still caught on horseback. At low tide you can see the fishermen at work. And the crabs are not just caught. Cooking demonstrations are regularly held and you can also buy crabs.

Oostduinkerke is known for its shrimp fishing. It is the only place in Europe where this happens on horseback. In 2013, shrimp fishing on horseback was added to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The tradition has been around for about 500 years. The shrimp fishermen, who sit high on their sturdy farm horses, still command everyone's admiration as they laboriously plow through the waves.
