The Gelpetal stretches over four kilometers after Huckenbach and Dornbach have merged to form the Gelpe. The hammer mills and grinding shops used to be lined up along the course of the stream like a string of pearls. At the end of the 19th century, water lost its importance as an energy supplier in favor of electricity. The companies were able to leave the narrow valleys and set up new and larger establishments on the plateaus.

During this time, the Gelpetal lost its importance as an industrial location and the Gelpetal, like the neighboring Saalbachtal, became a popular local recreation area for Wuppertal and Remscheid. The construction of the Ronsdorf dam in 1898 accelerated this development. Numerous excursion restaurants were created with well-known names such as Bergisch Nice, Gelper Hof and Zillertal.
