Mother Earth I, a bronze statue by the Kortrijk artist Ann Deman, has been in the orchard of the town hall on the banks of the Leie since 2008.

The statue symbolizes the fertility of our earth in the figure of the woman. The shapes of the statue allow children to climb on it and that leaves its mark. The statue has already been restored for the second time.

The bronze statue ‘Mother Earth I’ by Kortrijk artist Ann Deman has been sensually situated on the banks of the Latemse Leie for over 12 years. It symbolises motherhood, fertility and connection with the earth. Earlier this year, it was removed for restoration because it was frequently climbed on, which left its mark. The municipality is now going to purchase the work of art for 134,000 euros. “The statue has now become part of the place, widely known and a clear marker on the site,” says alderman Pieter Vanderheyden (Welfare).
