You can see this church from afar in the wide perimeter. An ideal landmark.

The eclectic main church of Wetteren, in red brick with a white frame, was built in 1866. The church is striking because of its high nave.

The old church, dating from the 12th/13th century, was demolished. The new church was consecrated in 1866. It had two aisles, a built-in western tower, and a high nave.

A row of columns with statues of apostles separates the nave from the aisles. The style is eclectic, also called "Rundbogenstil" here: a combination of Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine elements. The decor is Neo-Gothic.

Inside are paintings by J. Pauwels (Christ Dead on His Mother's Lap), Bertolotti (Assumption of Mary), J.B. Paggi (Christ, the Apostles, and St. Bernard), and a panel attributed to Hugo Van der Goes (Miraculous Mass of St. Gregory). The patron saint of Nivelles, St. Gertrude, is depicted in two paintings by De Riemaecker, as well as (along with her sister Begga and cousin Wulfetrudis) on the baptismal font.

Also see the main altar with its retable, the restored organ, and a series of statues, candlesticks, and holy water fonts that originate from the old Romanesque church.

Permanent exhibition: 130 dolls are on display wearing the original costumes of 130 different sister congregations working in Belgium.

The costumes, dating from before the Second Vatican Council, were made by the sisters themselves using the original fabrics of their daily habits.
